T-Shirt Rug aka Flokati Rug

So I was telling you about the T-shirt rug the other day and I thought I would show you some pictures. As I said in a previous post this is about 2 maybe closer to 3 years of work (off and on of course!)
Here are the scraps laid out across the couch. It may not look like a lot but it is a lot. Every time I work on it for about an hour I think my bucket will be closer to empty and it never is.

Here's a close up of what it looks like.

Landon loves to play with all the colorful scraps! Especially the hems. (This is probably why its taken so long  lol)

Here is a top view of what I have got done (It was supposed to be a rainbow design however I bought it at a garage sale much cheaper than buying the large latch hook canvas thing from the craft store.)

Here is the back view. Now I kind of made a mistake here, if you are planning on making one of these do not tie in every space do every other space like a checker board. My rug is so heavy already and it is a lot harder to work with. I have another started and doing it in checker fashion it feels better and doesn't look like a huge mound. I will have to cut these pieces down when finished so it will lay a bit flatter.

So there it is it is getting closer to half way. But still quite a ways away. It is amazing to see how when you start a project you swear to have it done in a reasonable amount of time and then you have to force yourself to do any work on it at all, even when you know it will look great!

Anyway to make these I have no idea how many T-shirts go into these but there are lots (roughly 50 ish so far). For me it wasn't going to buy these I figure people clean out their closets all the time so I posted a wanted ad on Craigslist and asked if anyone had t shirts they didn't want or need. Most had holes or paint etc but you can cut around those or use them. It depends what look you are going for. Also for more supplies use the hems of your shirts you can or cannot cut out the stitching it may be tougher with it but make sure to use them because it is perfectly good fabric for this.  My other one is a gray full latch hook canvas. I have taken the whites from shirts or old under shirts etc and dyed them a deep gray however It is taking me a lot longer to get just white. But its good because if the whites have logos they go in this rug! I just love the possibilities.
